If at first you don’t succeed, tri tri again….

So just a short and quick update. Last weekend was the white water rafting trip on the Upper Gauley River near Hico, West Virginia. I think everyone saw that I got dumped out. As one of the guides said “You got a turd’s eye view of the world.” At least I made it back safe as there had been three commercial deaths in three weeks. The previous one being the day before! I had a pretty good time. I think I would’ve had a better time had I not had an upcoming math test making me think that still going on the trip wasn’t such a good idea. Due to this I went to bed early and didn’t stay up with the rest of the people partying. In the end I studied enough for the test and more studying wouldn’t have really made a difference. There were 3 gimme-ish questions and then 2 questions to make or break the curve. Had I studied more I don’t think I would’ve hit up on the right things to get those other two problems correct. Maybe some more partial credit but not totally right.

This weekend I traveled with several others to East Lansing, Michigan for the Michigan State University Spartan Sprint. This was a nice and cool race. It was in the 30s at race time and had frosted overnight! The swim was outdoors in a pool. The pool was nice and warm once you got in but standing out there waiting to get in was a bear seeing as how it was probably just above freezing. I had troubles swimming with goggles as they kept fogging over. (You see I don’t totally put my face in the water but kinda half ass that part.) Anyway for me the swimming is always a challenge. You can check out the results and see that I was 49th of 57 in the swim but ended up towards the front of the pack otherwise. I need to get my ass in gear and do some more training as my run time was pretty atrocious. Even my bike could’ve been better. All in all I was comfortable and warm enough. That was the main goal. I think I finished and looked up at the large display by the stadium that touted a balmy 40 degrees! At least it was sunny. I could’ve done without the wind though.

So if you roll back your calendars to when Mom & PJ first left for Europe, ages ago I know, I went home to visit Chris and pick up some bike rollers from PJ. On Sunday, Chris and I went for a brisk walk through John Bryant. At the bridge we spotted this snake and the spidery thing. I think I’d be much more freaked out by the spidery thing than the snake. The spider thing had to be a huge wolf spider or something. That or one of those mythical barking spiders. I’m not sure.

So can you tell what is wrong in this picture? Hint: look at the bike lock. I didn’t really test it out but thought it pretty interesting that someone would try to lock up their bike purely by the handle bars. Not that anyone would really want to steal a POS Next. I was tempted to slide the bike lock off and just leave it there for the person to find. The devil wasn’t speaking to me from his perch on my shoulder. So instead I just took a picture.

The beginning of classes came way to fast. Fortunately so did the parties.

I spur of the moment jumped in the car and headed off to Old Boys. It was a great time. I showed up just before the second half and am pissed at myself for missing the first half. Oh well. Better late than never. The normal shenanigans ensued but it just seemed so much crazier when I was in undergrad. And I know that we did party a bit harder. Some key individuals were missing and some faces I never thought I’d see again showed up.

On the way back from Illinois I saw this and laughed. Luckily my camera was right next to me. The damn thing has goggles and everything!

The following weekend after Old Boys I participated in my first ever Olympic distance Triathlon. That means 1.5 km swim, 40 km bike, and a 10k run. I was worried about the swim but overall was very happy with my time. I borrowed my friends wetsuit, which helped a lot. I predicted it would take me an hour to finish the swim. My friends were more optimistic betting around 45 minutes. In the end I finished the swim in 36 minutes. Still slow as molasses but not glacial.

One of the guys didn’t want to do the race and instead took pictures. There is a whole set of them here. My favorite two are this one and this one and well this one too and maybe this guy. Oh yeah and I brought home some hardware :) .
Yeah getting the originals from the guy who took the pictures is on my agenda.

Over Labor Day weekend we finally busted out a bocce ball set that I purchased years ago. I can’t say for sure that I bought them Rochester, I’m thinking it might’ve been sometime during my first year at Purdue. But more importantly we busted out the rollers and my friend Cameron

Last weekend (the weekend of the 12th) the Purdue Triathlon team put on their own Triathlon. Things could’ve run more smoothly but all in all the race went off without a hitch. I led the bikers on my friends motorcycle.

I’ve been doing some intramurals with my fellow triathletes with varying degrees of success. Photos of my (poor) athleticisim may be found here.

This Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday I’ve been presenting some of my labs work to some HS students south of Indy. It’s funny going back to school. I enjoyed the goofiness of HS kids. I had to laugh with all the trash strewn hallways full of castoff pencils and papers littering the hallway. Leaving during class change was fun. Being back in college is enough of a trip, seeing HS again was even funnier.
Ok time to catch up on some of the schoolwork I missed today because I was gone back to HS.

So I had a hair up my butt to make some cookies a while back. I cobbled together what I had and looked for a recipe that would accomodate what I had. Emily helped a bit by donating some items as well as giving me some tips (baking powder doesn’t equal baking soda and baking chocolate is a hell of a lot different than chocolate chips….these were all things she had learned the hard way herself :) ). Anyway the cookies came out well….hard and unpalatable.

So I tupperwared them up and left them on the stove. The next day I get back from school and have one. Lo and behold! they are gloriously soft and delicious. Somehow the West Lafayette swamp water had seeped into the Tupperware and softened the cookies up! Brilliant! West Lafayette sewer water: Not just for drinking anymore!

The Tuesday of finals I got up early to join fellow Tri people for the Senior sendoff at the local breakfast dive at 6am. There was quite a good turnout for it.

I was kinda scared when I was riding down to the diner of getting hit or something. THere were quite a few people out and about at 6 in the morning. Hell there was even one guy washing his car at the car wash place by my apartment building. Maybe he didn’t want the Sun to dry the water up and give it water spots???

The Friday before graduation I hit up the gym before heading home. The staff came on the PA announcing the closing of the gym as well as a tornado warning. I scoffed at both and finished up my workout. I step outside and the ground is wet although it is still spitting a bit. Thunder and lightning are present. Yeah so I jump on my nice metallic bike disregarding the heavens. About 5 minutes into my ride home Zeus laughs, throws some lightning bolts in my direction and proceeds to open the floodgates. I get drenched. Then as I continue my journey through the deluge I get this weird prickly feeling on my Jesus-sandaled feet. Then I get it elsewhere. Zeus feels that I’m disrespecting him so he proceeds to rain slightly smaller than marble sized hail at me. I continue to disregard him and pedal my way past more god fearing pansies in their cars who have stopped since they can’t see. I enjoy a shower on my way home and make it home safe and sound although my book bag is drenched. I pull out my papers and books to begin the drying of them all. My bag did need a good wash as there had been some beer spilt upon it Wednesday night when I went out with some friends to celebrate one of them passing their thesis defense in the morning. So thanks Zeus for washing my bag. My bag only smelled like a brewery for a few days at school!

The following morning was graduation. I gave away most of my tickets and decided to forego the ceremony. Smart move. I saved 2.5 hours of my life. The EE reception afterwards was a bit hodge-podge and chaotic. I did see most of the people who I knew. I even heard that my name was up on the big screen for graduation! Later on that night I went to a friends for a grad BBQ. It was lightly attended (as well as being chilly ~40F) but still a good time.

So the same weekend Emily left for Florida and it was just myself and the Furball. All I could do was think of the old Disney Swamp Fox theme. “Swamp Fox, Swamp Fox, feather in his cap. No one knows where the Swamp Fox at.” I changed it to “Furball, Furball, Furball cat. No on likes the furball cat.” Pretty clever huh hahahahah.

I picked up a heart rate monitor for cheap $20 online. Well you get what you pay for. I’m either pushing up daisies or in need of an ambulance due to my heart about to explode out of my chest. I’m curious who wears these things though. On the side of the box it states “Using a Heart Rate Monitor is the easiest way to ensure you’re reaching your optimal heart rate during workouts, or TO TRACK STRESS LEVELS DURING THE DAY.” Holy Shit if you are using it at work you need a change of profession. Dude might as well dig a hole and jump in it.

I got a decent workout yesterday and did a BRIC by myself. It stand for Bike followed by a Run. I don’t know why the extra letters are there. I’m not that clever. I rode for 1:30 and then ran for another hour. The run was pretty tough. My legs were pretty shot. I suffered through it and even found a golf ball. I had to take a nap after doing all this though. Of course it proly didn’t help that I ate a whole thing of cinnamon rolls by myself when I got done (1200 calories!). But hey for brunch after that I figured it was ok calorie-wise possibly not health-wise though.

Today has been a bit more relaxing. I put together one of my Lego sets. It took 2:15 and it had all the pieces! Woo hoo!

As in a tonne (that’s metric) of stuff to talk about.

Thursday night people met up for one guys birthday at a local Irish bar. He was turning the big 2-8! Yikes. He is kinda an older crotchety grumpy receding hairline guy. He seems to be a nice guy but I haven’t had any “fun” experiences around him. That really made me feel like a young guy. I hope I never get old and crotchety like him. I’m such a stark contrast to that guy seeing as how half the time the kids I hang out with totally forget how old I am compared to themselves. Good thing age is only a number and you really are only as old as you feel.

Last Friday was the day of the Pub Crawl. I decided to make one last pit stop at Goodwill to see if they had a kids golf club and some golf cleats. Well they had neither. But they did have some really kick ass Legos that my eyes fell upon. Really it must have been my lucky day. How did Goodwill end up with slightly beat up Star Wars Clone Wars Legos and how was it that no one else had gobbled them up? There were two of the one set and I figured “Hell for this much of a discount why not get both!” So I grabbed three huge boxes of Legos and got in line to checkout. While I was in line a woman behind me asked where I got the Legos and if there were any more left. I told her that I got them back in the toy section and that no there weren’t anymore left. She told me how her one son’s birthday was on the 28th of April and that he had been showing her the Lego Star Wars section every time that she went to Wal-Mart. Seeing as how I had two of the one set, I gave the least banged up box to her. She thanked me a whole bunch. I didn’t need to be that greedy or to spend that money on toys so what the hell. I hope the little kid got what he wanted on his birthday. I looked up the prices on the sets. I paid $14.99 a piece for the banged up boxes that hopefully have all their pieces. The Lego Store lists them at $60 and $90 a piece. What a steal.

Friday was also the day that I made a trip down to SE side of Indy for a wine tasting and tour. I needed to do it as part of my wine appreciation class. That was an interesting trip. Indianans don’t like “real” wine. They like super sugary crap. The characters that Blake and I saw while doing our own tasting. Redneck city. I felt like I was damn near dressed up and classy in my T-shirt. One older lady rolled in with her husband. She was tasting the blueberry wine and shouting her commendations about the wine to the entire tasting room while her husband examined the wine racks (to get away from her). Two “ladies” came in. One was pretty rough looking with some fine tattoos and I’ll be damned if she wasn’t a dyke. Not to say she can’t go and enjoy wine…but man it was a slice of Indiana culture at Buck Creek Winery.

The Pub Crawl went pretty well. No winners. Only survivors. I don’t think that anyone made it past the 4th hole. I didn’t. I had added some gimmicks to the pub crawl. Gummi bears and Oreos were taken to the bars. One guy got girls phone number written on his shirt in exchange for girls numbers. The only bad thing was that everybody was pretty much cashed out at 12:30 am and people had kinda gotten split up anyway. All in all I think everyone had a pretty good time.

I rode my motorcycle and helped lead the bicycle course. That was pretty fun. A group of people who felt like procrastinating ended up washing and waxing cars Sunday afternoon since it was so nice.

On Sunday people egged me into entering the Tri-The-Illini sprint triathlon. I signed up and figured that so I didn’t make a complete ass out of myself I better get into the pool and do one of the swim workouts. Well I think the best that can be said is that I didn’t drown. I did ingest some chlorine flavored water however. My “coaches” mentally shook their heads seeing my poor swim form and how I didn’t really stick my head under the water. I swam over 1000m on Wednesday. Lifted on Thursday. Got back in the pool on Friday morning and did another 1000m. Then on Friday night I did just about 11 miles on the stationary bike before doing a couple laps right after getting off the bike to see how it’d feel. The getting off the bike felt fine. The getting out of the pool after 1000m didn’t. My coaches think that I hyperventilate and that’s why I can’t stick my head in the water. I kinda agree since I did the drunk guy swerve to my sandals and keys after jumping out of the pool. I told my friend how I kinda had worked out a bit more than usual and she just laughed stating that I’d be fine. It’s not that I didn’t think that I’d do fine its just that I at least wanted to knock some rust off seeing as how I hadn’t a) swam the past decade b) run recently much and c) had been at least 2 weeks without a decent bike ride.

Tri-The-Illini (300m swim, 11 mile bike, 3.1 mile run) started at 8am so we left West Lafayette around 5:30am. We got there with plenty of time. I took one guy around the run course, which went around the Quad, on our bikes. We knew we weren’t going to start for a long time due to our bib numbers. We still almost were late as they were closing the transition area where you change when we were finally getting ready. Myself and the other guy, Scott, got yelled at that they were closing the transition. To guesstimate how much time you get to wait after the first person gets in the pool just multiply your bib number by 10 seconds. I was number 315! That is all based off of the swim time you submitted for the 300m. Seeing as how when I signed up on the previous Sunday that I hadn’t even been in the pool, I had no clue what to put down. I can’t remember if I put down 10 minutes and then changed that to 15 or not. One of my friends said that I stuck down 15 minutes.

Needless to say she said she put down 4 minutes for herself! Although she did swim at Northeastern in Boston in undergrad. Anyway most of the people I was with were bib number 50 or lower. So I got to hang out by myself and take their pictures. The time went by quick especially when you get to people watch people in their swimsuits :) I got pretty damn excited and jittery standing in line to jump in the pool. I actually did pretty well with it all. I was pretty far back so I passed a few people on the swim (but many more on the bike and run). I didn’t even get my hair all the way wet until I had to go under the lane line for the first turn around in the swim! I floated on my back a very short bit but for the most part actually swam the whole thing which I hadn’t really done before on my two previous workouts. I got out of the pool and jumped on my bike. As I got on my bike and headed out one of the girls from Purdue was all ready coming in to the finish! I yelled some words of encouragement and zoomed off on the bike. The bike was a bit of a tour of some old stomping grounds including the rugby fields. Sadly they weren’t playing. Well it was 9ish in the morning. I felt like I had some jelly legs after getting off the bike and trying to run. It took a while before I got into a running rhythm and wasn’t so fatigued from biking. Running through the Quad was a challenge as it was Math Bowl day and the place was crawling with high school students. They were swarming like ants and the race volunteers couldn’t keep them from getting in the way. I got some cheers as I wore my Illinois cycling jersey, although my Purdue buddies made fun of me for not wearing Purdue stuff.

All in all I did damn well and am glad I did it. I just need to get in the pool more and learn how to swim again.
I finished top ten for my age group (!) and 72nd overall.

Afterwards we stuck around as the girls kicked some ass. The girl I saw coming in when I was leaving on the bike won her age group and was the top female finisher overall. The two other girls came in 2nd and 3rd. The guys did really well also. Look up Robin Bauer, Sara Underwood, Mandy Scheinfeldt, Andy Jessop, Brian Pomeroy and Ethan Brush.

This was all at the new UI athletic facility. It was pretty and nice although they laid some things out really weird and not really efficiently if you ask me. Campus was booming and I noticed a few more parking garages and other additions that weren’t on campus when I left. Seeing that campus just goes to show me how much better of a school UI is over Purdue. I know buildings don’t make a school. But they sure are a reflection of some of the success they’ve had.

We made it back to West Lafayette after getting a burger on campus (which was crawling with the said Math Bowl HS students and UI students on a 15 hr – 21 bar pub crawl. Sniffle and my pub crawl could barely scrape together 7 bars). I took a quick nap and then was off to the end of year triathlon club bbq. They handed out fun awards. All the awards started out with “Most likely…” Here is mine:
